The Picture Book a Day Challenge

Coleman's story follows the journey of African American people from their homelands, through slavery and emancipation to current times. Hopeful and uplifting, it encourages the readers to "become a drum" and speak out against injustice and work towards equality.

The cover of this book makes me smile. It features pirates and underpants so my students loved it the second they saw it.  One of my reluctant readers found this book in the library and begged me to read it to the class and of course, I said, "If you are really good..." which he was. This is one of those stories that you are going to want to read before recess. It really gets children excited. It is about a pirate crew that goes in search of the famed golden underpants. Along the way, the crew encounters crocodiles, snakes, and another pirate crew.
