Week 3

 It took exactly three weeks for me to get behind on this project of mine. Here is Week 3 (a week late):


Monday--The Dot by Peter Reynolds 

I love this book. It is part of my reading curriculum. I can't read the dedication page without getting choked up. It is a great story about not giving up, believing in yourself, and the power of a great teacher. Love, love, love this book. 


Tuesday--All Are Welcome by Alexandria Penfold. 

After reading this, we talked about the fact that our class is a family and that although we all come from different places, we are all going to live and learn together. 


Wednesday--A Truck Full of Ducks by Ross Bursch

A student brought this in and asked me to read it. I had never read it before. It is really funny. We laughed throughout. It is the story about a truck driver who is making a delivery of ducks, but one of the ducks eats the directions. I won't give away the ending. It's hysterical though. This is a selection when you are having one of "those" days. 



Thursday---Student Story

A student brought in a story today and I read it aloud. He was so incredibly proud. I have a feeling I will be seeing many more student story submissions. lol. 

Friday--Off To Class by Susan Hughes

My district uses EL as our reading curriculum. Off to Class is one of the stories included in the curriculum. I love this book. It shows different schools around the world and explains some of the challenges facing the communities. Right now, we are reading about a rainforest school in Brazil. It was so remote, the village didn't have electricity or phones.  The highest grade the kids could go to school was 3rd grade. Then, the community brought in satellites and solar panels. 

This book always sparks good conversation about school and students are making connections to their own experience about virtual learning last year. 

Student 1: We struggled last year. We had to learn online. It wasn't the same. 

Student 2: But we had to cause it wasn't safe. 

Student 1: We did the best we could. Just like them.

I used WHAT DO YOU THINK, KATIE? (written by Fran Manushkin and illustrations by Tammie Lyon) from the Katie Woo series to introduce opinion writing.  The book begins as a friendship story. Katie and her friends try to decide what to do and get mad at each other.  At first, Katie is very unreasonable but she works her way through the conflict.  Throughout the story, sidebars teach about opinion writing. At one point, I had my students stop and write whether they agreed or disagreed with Katie and support what they thought. Everyone wrote because it was very obvious that she was wrong and all my students knew it. There are many more Katie Woo stories. I am definitely going to look into buying them.

Day 41

I have discovered my students need practice rhyming words, so I will be adding poetry to the challenge in the coming weeks. SHIMMER: SONGS OF NIGHT, written by Raven Howell and illustrated by Carina Povarchick, is a beautiful selection I stumbled upon while looking for poetry.  The collection of poems is all about the time between sundown and sunup.  This time is typically scary to young children but this collection points out the magic and wonder of nighttime. The illustrations add a layer to the poetry I love and find myself getting lost in. The clever word play, kid friendly content and whimsical illustrations make this book one that will be hard to top.

Day 42

ENEMY PIE, by Derek Munson and illustrated by Tara Calahan King, is a great story for second graders learning about relating to others. A boy has an enemy. Dad suggests a surefire way to fix enemy Jeremy once and for all--enemy pie.  While dad makes enemy pie, the main character spends the day with Jeremy and learns that his enemy is really not so bad. This story has lots of tension and the little twist at the end is just what my kiddos love right now. ENEMY PIE definitely has a message but it is so entertaining, students don't even realize they are being taught. I love that.
